homeschool recap
We focused on the letter C this week. I have a lot more material to cover so we will be continuing next week. Here's a closer look at what we studied:
This week's scripture story focus was on The Creation. I do a lot of studying the weekend prior picking out a topic that starts with that week's letter focus and determining what gospel principle I want them to learn. This was a great topic for us to cover because it tied in with our science studies as well. We believe that while Jesus created the earth under the direction of God, we also very much believe in science in this household :)
As always, I get the bulk of my printables from LDS.org when it comes to our scripture study. They have awesome coloring pages, activities and videos that you can search by subject in the "children" section. We watched this video and this video. I always choose a scripture from our readings for Zoey to copy into her journal, illustrate and then memorize.
We also did a flannel board story with these printables. This was a great review for the kids after reading Genesis 1 and watching the videos.
Des did his weekly dot-to-dot letter formation with the printable from Simply Learning. I have been encouraging him to try tracing the letters for the "write it" section but his grip isn't strong enough yet, so he gets frustrated. I will keep encouraging but not let him get too stressed out about it.
By the way, you can get Dot-to-Dot markers on amazon but they are kind of pricey. I surprisingly always find them at Home Goods for half the price!
We studied chickens and I found some great printables from here like the rhyming sheet seen above.
This awesome Parts of a Chicken printable is from this blog. Zoey used Farm Anatomy to determine how she wanted to color her chicken. She mimicked it after the Loghorn chicken.
We read Chickens Aren't the Only Ones (a book from my childhood) and then I gathered up their small animal toys and had them sort which animals were born and which hatched from eggs. They played with this activity for a long time.
Each of them made a life cycle of the chicken sheet. And we made hard boiled eggs together, and peeled the shells off. I always like incorporating a life skill into our lessons.
Another day we focused on C is for cookies. We read If You Give a Mouse A Cookie and Des practiced his counting by counting the chips on each of the printable cookies and he made his own cookies to match with some homemade cinnamon scented playdough and chocolate chips. We also used these printables, which I didn't photograph, and I was surprised that he was able to identify the numbers! That's been something he has been slow to learn. He's great at counting but seeing the numbers was a bit of a challenge. So happy with this progress!
For tea time we skipped the tea and had Oreos and milk with our reading If You Give A Mouse A Cookie! I never buy Oreos (well, I guess in this case, Trader Jo-Jos) so I had no idea that Des HATES them. Well, now we know! Haha!
Zoey and I are still breezing through The Playful Pioneers curriculum and loving it. As usual, I can never stick to a curriculum with exactness. I always have to change things up and add things or omit things, but that's the beauty of homeschool! I don't know if I have mentioned this but the literature that all of the lessons are built around are the Little House On the Prairie series. It has been amazing for learning American History and for keeping Zoey interested. This week the Ingalls family focused a lot on the light of the moon from their little homestead on the prairie. So we learned all about the moon! I used Oreos to create the moon phases and used a printable from Playful Learning. We will be documenting the phases of the moon for the next month!
This printable can be used with Dot-to-Dot markers but I had him cover them with glass beads. He pretended that they were water bubbles from under the sea. I thought that was so cute! And he did wonderfully identifying all of the Cs!
Zoey has officially mastered her doubles addition to 20 and she's very proud. She LOVES doing this worksheets and always feels happy to get 100%!
