last weekend in DC
It was our last weekend in DC and we packed it in with lots of fun. Early on Friday morning I took the kids on a hike around the lake, and this time they were prepared in their swimsuits and I let them get in the lake and get muddy and gross. This was very exciting for them because I usually just let them throw rocks into the lake...not their bodies. Zoey brought her instax camera and took some photos and Zelda napped in the ergo on me and then when she woke up she was happy to lay on a blanket in the shade and look at the clouds. We had a great morning and I was happy that it was cool enough to do this. A happy respite from the scorching heat as of late.
When Ted got home from work that afternoon we drove to Springfield and had so much fun at the "Our Special Harbor" splash pad and Chessie's Playground. It was incredible and beautifully maintained and free! We were seriously impressed with the city facility. Zoey and Des had so much fun playing and Zelda was happy to watch them. She's always so chill and content to just be along for the ride. We love her!
After playing we went to Mission BBQ and had an excellent dinner. Since the kids are so picky about food, we weren't expecting them to like anything but they both ate happily! We were...shocked, to say the least.
On Saturday we drove into DC and went to the Hirshhorn Museum and saw some beautiful pieces of modern art. I felt super lucky to see works by Jackson Pollock and Piet Mondrian up close, and to expose my kids to their beautiful art such a young age. Ted and I kept prompting the kids to tell us how the art made them feel and what they imagined the artist was trying to create in their paintings. It was an awesome learning experience and a very cool museum.
We got lunch at the nearby food trucks and then walked around the National Mall before getting some ice cream that pretty much immediately melted upon it being handed to us. That humidity and heat, man.
We had our last Sunday at the Fairfax Ward and it was bittersweet. We really have loved our ward here in Virginia. I had never had much success with visiting teaching/ministering before living here but I've been blessed by having one of the very best ministering sisters that truly took care of me throughout the last year. The Primary wrote letters to each of my kids and they were so sweet. We will miss Fairfax ward but we are excited to move back to Tucson.
