homeschool recap: A is for Ant
Last week we had our second week studying the letter A. This time we learned all about ants! We studied the life cycle of an ant, different species of ants, their diet and what their duties are. Through our different activities we practiced counting and more letter formation. Above are some of our favorite activities from the week.
a. Organizing the different stages of the life cycle.
b. Making ants on a log, counting the "ants" as we assembled. Since none of us like celery I cut strips of bread and they spread almond butter on top with dark chocolate chip ants.
c. Looking for natural materials outside and using those materials to make our own ants with the help of Nature Anatomy.
d. Using honey on a letter A to attract ants. We learned that ants particularly love sweets, so this made for a fun activity to observe them up close and let them have a snack.
Since Zoey is along for the preschool ride, I try to add some things that are more challenging while I'm working with Des. She drew her own life cycle, labeling it, and putting into her journal. She also drew an ant's habitat and drew and labeled the anatomy of an ant. These activities are all on top of her usual afternoon routine.
